Which Mask Should You Wear?

1. N95 Respirators

N95 respirators use electrostatic filtration to block 95% of airborne particles (hence the name). They form a tight facial seal when properly fitted, minimizing air leakage. While offering superior protection, they may cause facial discomfort and pressure marks.

2. Surgical Masks

Unlike N95s, surgical masks don't filter aerosols and offer insufficient protection when directly exposed to COVID patients. However, they effectively block large droplets (like spit) and prevent wearers from spreading germs when coughing/sneezing. For non-medical settings, they provide adequate protection.

3. Cloth Masks

While CDC-recommended for public use, cloth masks can't filter aerosols. They offer basic protection when combined with staying home, minimizing outings, and maintaining 6-foot social distancing.

Proper mask-wearing requires learning correct techniques to effectively prevent virus transmission. Follow this 5-step method recommended by Hong Kong Department of Health:

1. SELECT: Choose right-sized masks
2. CLEAN: Wash hands before handling
3. CHECK: Verify mask integrity and orientation (colored side out, metal strip up)
4. COVER: Fully cover nose, mouth and chin
5. SECURE: Press metal strip to fit nose bridge

Many neglect hand hygiene when wearing masks. Remember to wash hands before/after touching masks to maintain effectiveness.

Stay Vigilant Against Risks
