"The Voice of China" Becomes Nostalgic Memory for Overseas Chinese

(Washington News)

With the premiere of "The Voice of China 2019", the nation has once again been swept up in a singing craze. Many may not realize that eight years have passed since the first season. Liang Bo's championship victory feels like just yesterday, while Wu Mochou's distinctive vocals still echo in our ears.

The Voice of China contestants

The first season of "The Voice of China" was a nationwide sensation, with families gathering every Friday night to sing along with the contestants. Mentor Yang Kun's famous recruitment line "72 concerts" became part of popular culture. Many Chinese who were still in China with their families in 2011 are now rooted in America, while earlier immigrants found themselves caught up in the show's cultural wave, humming its memorable tunes.

The show has consistently featured top-tier mentors. From the original panel (Liu Huan, Yang Kun, Na Ying, Harlem Yu) to subsequent additions like Jay Chou, Wang Feng, Nicholas Tse, Li Jian, and A-Mei, through to the 2019 newcomers Wang Leehom and Li Ronghao - each season brings industry heavyweights.

The Voice of China mentors

Let's revisit what past contestants have been doing:

Liang Bo

Mentor: Na Ying

The first season's champion made an immediate impact with his "Dou Wei-like appearance and Zhang Chu-esque demeanor." Known for avoiding sentimentalism and refusing to play industry games, Liang surprised everyone by returning to school after winning rather than capitalizing on his fame - preserving his artistic purity in what fans consider a remarkable act of integrity.

The season's third-place finisher stood out with her ethnic minority background and international appeal. Post-show, she released her debut single "Colorful Black" and won Best New Artist at the 2013 Huading Awards, continuing to build an impressive musical career.

After skyrocketing to fame with his rendition of "My Song", Li's career was derailed by a 2014 drug-related arrest. Recently resurfacing on Douyin with rap videos, he appears to be staging a comeback.

The season's runner-up delivered a stunning blind audition with A-Mei's "Maybe Tomorrow". Already established as the vocalist for "Empresses in the Palace" theme songs, her promising career was tragically cut short by illness.
