Fireworks celebration

After a year's hiatus, the fireworks spectacular makes its comeback. This year's celebrations will be bigger than ever, especially meaningful as America's "rebirth" after the pandemic.

Which fireworks displays are worth seeing this Independence Day? Where are the best shows near you? iTalkBB has prepared the ultimate viewing guide for you!

1. New York - Macy's Biggest Fireworks Show Ever

Macy's fireworks

Last year's Thanksgiving Parade was closed to spectators due to the pandemic, with only performers broadcasting live from empty streets.

This year, Macy's redesigned their fireworks show to return as a live event. New Yorkers are already excited to secure the best viewing spots! The show will have designated areas for fully vaccinated attendees, with separate sections for those unvaccinated.

Since its debut in 1976 celebrating America's bicentennial, Macy's July 4th fireworks have grown in scale and spectacle.

Mayor Bill de Blasio promises: "This will be Macy's biggest fireworks show ever," featuring performances by Coldplay, Tori Kelly and Reba McEntire.

2. San Francisco - Best Viewing Locations

The Ferry Building and Bay Bridge become magical when lit by fireworks. Normally drawing crowds of 200,000, last year's show was canceled due to COVID-19.

On June 11, Mayor London Breed tweeted: "San Francisco's July 4th fireworks are coming back this year!"

Mayor's announcement

With huge crowds expected, you'll need to arrive early for good spots. Here are our top recommendations:

Ferry Building:
The prime viewing area. Avoid standing directly in front of the building - the south side offers better sightlines.

Treasure Island:
This island in the bay offers panoramic views of the city skyline and fireworks (weather permitting).

Telegraph Hill:
The intersection of Alta Street and Calhoun Terrace provides the best elevated views overlooking the city.

Twin Peaks:
For uncrowded 360-degree views, hike up these famous hills (though be prepared for wind and fog).

3. Washington D.C. - Prime Viewing Spots

No Independence Day is complete without fireworks in the nation's capital! A star-studded concert will precede the fireworks on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol, with President Biden and Mayor Muriel Bowser welcoming visitors back to celebrate.

The National Mall remains the most popular viewing area. Great spots can be found near the Washington Monument, Jefferson Memorial, Lincoln Memorial, and along the National Mall.

The 17-minute display begins at 9:09 PM, with fireworks launched from both sides of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool.

Enjoy the Show - But Stay Safe

Safety first

With last year's cancellations due to COVID-19, Americans are eager to celebrate. However, pandemic precautions remain important: wear masks, wash hands frequently, and maintain social distancing. Don't let safety take a backseat to spectacular displays.

Backyard Fireworks - Know the Rules

While public displays return, many may consider setting off their own fireworks. Remember to check local regulations before lighting any fireworks.

Fireworks safety

States like California and New York have strict fireworks laws, permitting only "safe and sane" fireworks from licensed retailers.

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, over 8,500 firework-related injuries require emergency room treatment annually, mostly burns to hands, face and eyes. Alarmingly, over half involve children and young adults under 20.

With historic drought conditions in western states, fireworks pose serious wildfire risks. Many areas have implemented bans. iTalkBB reminds you to always check local laws and only use fireworks in open areas away from flammable materials. Have fun responsibly!
